Hope everyone has been enjoying their summer so far, we definitely have been! We’ve been on lots of hiking adventures both close to home, and in the national parks in Washington state which have provided us with so much inspiration that we have been bursting with new ideas. Come check out our new designs at one of our favorite markets, Montclair Pop-Up!

in JC for Father’s Day!

Screen Shot 2016-06-13 at 7.03.12 AMUsually my Father’s Days are spent with my Dad eating rippers at Rutt’s Hut. It’s his favorite, his day, his choice. He has graciously allowed us to push off this year (I’m guessing because he knows he’ll get 2 trips to Rutt’s Hut, one on Father’s Day and another with me whenever he wants) and instead this Sunday, June 19, we will be at our first 6th Borough Market in Jersey City! I’ve heard wonderful things from other vendor friends and and we are so excited to be back in Jersey City! Stop by and pick up a last minute gift for Dad.

Spring Bazaar 2016 Poster Final

This Saturday we are back again at one of our favorite venues, The Asbury Park Bazaar. May 7th also marks the grand opening of a new store on the boardwalk run by our friends at Big Spoon Little Spoon Naturals. They make the most heavenly soaps and bath products! We are honored that they asked us to be a part of their new venture! You can find a selection of our magnets in their store, that will be updated monthly. It gives us a fantastic excuse to hit the beach a little more than usual this summer.

Where do the sachets fit in?

Before there was an official Forage Workshop, I dabbled in lots of different mediums in art and in crafts. I started making sachets filled with balsam mainly for myself, I LOVE the smell of balsam, and to give as holiday gifts. The eye pillows were a soon second for exactly the same reason. I soon found that I had more than I needed, but I wanted to make even more, it was such a satisfying process! So I went downtown and talked to a local shop owner who suggested I put them in the towns seasonal holiday boutique. I put in a bunch of balsam sachets and some catnip toys as well. (another creation I had started making mostly for my own cat, Moose) Both items sold very well! I even had my balsam sachets featured in a blog! It was such a gratifying experience! I was hooked.

I kept at it, returning the following holiday season to sell in a local shop and to be a “featured maker”. The following  year I was laid off from the full time job I had held for 12 years. I felt free to try out all of the things I had always wanted to do, including making things to sell at local craft shows and markets. Forage was officially born! My focus of course was, and still is, wood burning, but I have never left behind the spark that started it all, my sweet smelling sachets.

Hope to see you there!

return of the light

Let me start by saying I am a summer baby, long days, green leaves and hot temperatures is when I am in my element for sure. Winter doesn’t suit me, a colorless cold, dark world just sends me hibernating with the bears. My brain and production levels slow down as soon as it’s dark, which makes the Christmas crazy time a real push for me. (Which may have been how I was susceptible to this nasty cold I still can’t shake) Even though most of winter still looms ahead, the solstice brings me peace of mind. The Christmas rush is over, and best of all, the light is coming! I have this app I like to look at after the solstice, called Daylight. It tells you the sunrise and sunset times for every day and every location. I love to watch the hours extend and the pie chart go back into balance.

Recently, I was working on a new version of my “Happy Solstice”ornament for myself. I am a big fan of ravens and I decided to include one in the branches of the tree.  Looking at it, I wondered if indeed the raven was connected to the solstice and curious as to what prompted me to include him. I started looking for stories about the two, and lo and behold it turns out that the Raven brings back the light. Check out this story I read on imaginativeworlds.com.FullSizeRender (3)

HOW RAVEN STOLE THE SUN
Once upon a time, a mean old chief hoarded the only light in the world. He did not want to share it. Raven decided that he could no longer tolerate this after growing tired of flying in the dark. He turned himself into a cedar leaf and fell into the chief’s dwelling.

Raven, as the cedar leaf, fluttered into a drink that the chief’s daughter was drinking. She unwittingly swallowed raven down with a gulp of her drink. She immediately became pregnant and gave birth. Her baby had hair as black as a raven’s, dark glowing eyes, and an awfully short temper. If the baby was bored, it would shriek. The chief ordered that the baby was to receive anything it wanted. One gift the baby got was a bag of shining stars. It liked the stars very much, until it accidentally threw them up through the smoke hole in the ceiling. The stars then scattered across the sky.

The baby grew bored yet again. It gave out more violent shrieks. It finally received a bag containing the Moon, and played with it happily. It remained pacified with the Moon until the Moon bounced out of the dwelling through the smoke hole.

The baby was angrier than it had ever been. Everyone searched desperately for anything to occupy the screaming child. All the gifts it received were rejected, as it pointed to the bag with the sun in it. The household finally gave the baby what it wanted, but did it reluctantly. But instead of opening the bag, the baby turned back into Raven, who flew through the smoke hole with the bag of light in his beak.. This was how Raven stole the Sun. Raven spread the light of the Sun throughout the world.
